Cairo

Pyramids

Cairo is one of the most polluted cities in the world and you feel it. Good thing I'm not here during summer! I met up with Martin here, a Philippino I met in M'Hamid and who travels the world as well. We decided to go to the pyramids on the Gizeh plateau. The plateau is right next to the city of Gizeh.

They are impressive all right. What's much more astounding is the price you have to pay to enter the site and the price to enter the Cheops pyramid is just ludicrous. We entered the Kephren pyramid which is cheaper. This was a big disappointment though, as there is just a corridor and an empty room at the end. Basically it's one big rip-off.

On the next day I went to see the egyptian museum. Many statues and hieroglyphs, and some small stuff. You have to pay extra to see the mummies, which I didn't. Apart for the obvious financial reasons I find it ethically questionable to dig up and display dead people.
Martin and I also went to see the red and rhomboidal pyramids, in Dachour. The rhomboidal pyramid was the first pyramid built. They started the first half with a 54 degree angle before they realised this was not a stable structure and continued with 43 degrees.

The red pyramid is just as impressive as the Gizeh pyramids and you can go inside for no extra charge.

Dachour is much cheaper than Gizeh. I'd advise to come here if you want to see pyramids. There are much less tourists and especially much fewer egyptians, who are the eight plague of Egypt (for travellers). Egypt is the worst country so far regarding hassle, it's a real pain!
I'm in Assouan now, I'll stay here for 2 nights and then go to Abu Dabab. Today Martin and me went to eat in a Kushari place where they wanted to charge us 5 EP each. We refused to pay more than 2 and we're not welcome there anymore :-) Tomorrow we'll go see the Ramses II temple in Abu Simbal.

Other news:
I got temporary residency in Egypt for 6 months. This solves the visa problem.
It's hot and sunny.
My MP3-player has stopped functioning! Goddammit!! :-(
I miss bacon...

Hello Fabrice,

quelle expédition! On sait tout, surtout le prix de chaque chose, ah, ces suisses!! Les pyramides! Mon rêve de les visiter un jour! Nous avons des frères et soeurs de la communauté du Chemin Neuf au Caire, cela t'intéresse?
